One of the most rewarding things about the Greenville Police Department is that the agency is small enough that you are more than “just a number” and don’t get lost in the anonymity of larger agencies, but still big enough that you have the ability and opportunity to perform numerous jobs within the department during the course of your law enforcement career. All GPD officers start in patrol as part of our Field Operations Bureau. Patrol is the primary provider of police services to the community and is considered to be the backbone of the GPD. No day in patrol is ever the same. Patrol officers investigate crimes, make arrests, patrol communities to make them safer, work with the community to solve problems, conduct community meetings, investigate traffic collisions, and provide general police services. While many officers choose to remain in patrol, others put in for promotions or for transfer to specialized divisions after a few years in the field. Specialized Assignments include:
